Since the early 18050's Canada has been viewed through the eyes of professional and amateur photographers dedicated to preserving their visions of this country. Canadians both great and small, from cowboys to town councillors, blacksmiths to bank managers, dance-hall girls to ditch diggers, were captured for ever on photographic plates and prints.
Subjects Range widely from an 1884 baseball game in B.C. to child workers in a turn-of-the-century New Brunswick cotton mill, from a wild, Indian dance, surreptitiously photographed it seems, to the rectitude of a celebratory banquet in a St. Boniface sewer. Of particular interest are the superb reproductions from rare glass negatives unearthed in a vault in Saint John, New Brunswick.
This album of striking and often amusing photographs is a unique reflection of Canada's past.
