For centuries, ornamental robes made of buffalo hide and fur were painted with intricate figures and scenes by artists of the various Native American nations. A great number of these robes were brought to France in the 18th century, many of which are now housed in the extraordinary collection of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris. This volume, illustrated with more than a hundred color plates, presents a gallery of the hides with commentary by George P. Horse Capture, who also contributes an illustrated essay on the craft and history of buffalo hide painting. Three experts on Native American art provide introductory and historical essays.
