This book by Paul McCarthy features photos of soiled, dirty, and damaged objects one might encounter in the trash -- such as dolls, bottles, toys, and other discarded items. Many of these objects are in fact props from McCarthy's performances, and their visual inventory here reads like a book of modernity's detritus. The book, originally available as a limited-edition artist's book, is now being republished as an affordable trade edition. Born in Salt Lake City in 1945, Paul McCarthy has lived and worked in the Los Angeles area since 1970. He presently teaches at the University of California, Los Angeles. McCarthy began doing performances and films in 1967 and video tapes in 1970. His work has been widely exhibited throughout Europe and the U.S. including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Museum of Modern Art; and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
