Ethel Luella Curry was an usually adventurous landscape artist from Haliburton. At the Ontario College of Art (from which she graduated in 1930), she first met J.E.H. MacDonald, then the principal. During the 1930s, she taught children;s art classes under Arthur Lismer, and went on to be an outstanding art teacher at Northern Secondary School in Toronto for more than thirty years. A major incluence on her quiet, thoughtful disposition was her father, known to everyone as "W.R". Arriving dirt poor in Haliburton village in 1906, he became the community's leading citizen through his hard work. Northern Belle chronicles Ethel's life, including the story of her father's remarkable rise to prominence.
