Hutchinson specialized in prints depicting the economic and social condition of the poor and unemployed and the landscape of Ontario. "... Hutchinson Could not ignore the plight of the people, both in rural and industrial areas, during the depression years. He was deeply moved by the hardships of the unemployed and the suffering of the farmers scratching out a living on the land. His numerous images of the oppressed and the unemployed show his sympathy with their condition. The starkness and graphic quality of the black and white print, especially wood engraving, providing a perfect vehicle for his themes." (Ainslie, p. 57)
