Raised near Owen Sound, George Thomson began his adult life running a business college. He decided to become an artist in his late thirties and studied at the Art Students League, New York, in 1906. He then lived in Connecticut for some years before returning permanently to Owen Sound in 1926. He worked as an artist and teacher in the Owen Sound, Georgian Bay and Muskoka areas. A prolific artist working in a post-impressionist of style, he produced many fine Northern Ontario landscape paintings in a career spanning over sixty years. George Thomson was an exhibiting member of the Ontario Society of Artists. He was also the elder brother of the notable Canadian painter Tom Thomson.
