Some of the names of early settlers include: Corrigan, Kelly, Kennedy, Corbett, McLean, McGrath / MacGrath, O'Donnell, Roach, Donnelly, Judge, Tyrell, Foley, Murphy, O'Boyle, Boyle, Hogan, Lennon, Flynn, Gaughan, Sheridan, Kenny, Doyle, Burk, O'Neil, Mulhearn and Maloney. Most of the settlers were of Irish, Scottish and English decent. Irish settlers were mainly located in the center of Mara with the Scottish and English in the north and south ends of the township.
The first settlers to Mara are featured on this map: Patrick Corrigan & Arthur Kelly aka Little Red who arrived in the late 1820s and lived to be over 110 years old. James Patrick Foley, who arrived in 1860 and founded Brechin is also featured on this map.
