These 21 images are a photographic journey through Sri Lankan temples, French gardens, Roman and Egyptian ruins, and nightlife in Latin America. They also document the lives of gypsies in Eastern Europe and political turmoil in El Salvador, Haiti, and the Gaza Strip. Among these images of the surreal, the hidden, and the unsettling is Larry Trowell’s photograph of Palestinian children wielding guns that was awarded the World Press Photo of the Year in 1993.
