People of the Dancing Sky: The Iroquois Way is a coffee-table book by Toronto photographer Myron Zabol. The photographer's five-year project resulted in this collection of black and white portraits of fifty-nine people associated with the Six Nations Iroquois. The list of people represented reads like a who's who of the Haudenosaunee. Chiefs, Faithkeepers, Clan Mothers, artists, singers, powwow dancers, lacrosse players, teachers, and children are portrayed in classic poses that acknowledge their cultural traditions. Each person is dressed in his or her ôIndian clothesà that range from traditional Haudenosaunee to powwow. Tom Hill's enlightening introduction directs the untrained eye of Non-Haudenosaunee readers to the changing clothing styles of modern Iroquoian people. A brief biographical sketch of the person's background and achievements accompanies each portrait. An introductory essay outlines the cultural, political, historical, and spiritual background of contemporary Iroquois communities. This allows the reader to gain an understanding of the vital culture of the Six Nations Iroquois who reside in Canadian and American communities. This collection of portraits demonstrates the strength and pride contained within the Haudenosaunee.
