The first eye-witness description of Niagara appeared in 1683 when Father Louis Hennepin wrote of 'the incredible Cataract of Waterfall which has no equal". With Father Hennepin's words the authors begin this handsome volume. Niagara grew out of the authors' interest in the iconography and history of the area; their concern is not primarily with local history but those aspects of Niagara that have made an impact on North America and, at times, the whole western world.

The text is containing in six essays dealing with different aspects of Niagara's history up to the year 1900.
