What happens when you organize a massive photo contest open to both amateur and professional photographers - the rules being that submissions must reflect some aspect of contemporary life in Toronto?

For starters you receive nearly seven thousand images. A jury then selects the est entrants. The photographs are enlarged and publicly displayed in store windows along one of the city's main thoroughfares creating one of the biggest open air galleries in the world.

Finally, they are brought together in a book that strikes a note from the heart of the city.

The photographs on the following pages are a gift from the people of Toronto. We hope you enjoy them.
