In 1875, a group of Scots and Canadians accustomed to playing "the roaring game" on the frozen Toronto Bay of Lake Ontario resolved to build themselves a bare bones, covered rink with metered gas lights and outhouses "for the comfort of the members". Thus Toronto's Granite Club was born. The curlers took up lawn bowling, added other sporting activities and club rooms and moved further north to bigger premises as both the membership and the city grew. In the past 125 years the Granite Club has evolved from a gentlemen's curling club to a multi-sport and social organization for the whole family.

An expanded facility in 1926 allowed the club to hire professionals to train budding athletes as well as enthusiastic members. Over the years, the Granite Club has produced provincial and national champions in curling, skating, hockey, swimming, diving, badminton, and tennis. Their staff and facilities have been a boon to some of Canada's premier athletes.
