Matta-Clark died on August 27, 1978, as the book was going to press at the age of 35.Documentation of Gordon Matta-Clark's first museum-sponsored project, entitled Circus or The Caribbean Orange. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago had recently acquired an adjacent three-story townhouse to be renovated into additional space. Before the renovation was put into effect Matta-Clark was invited to present a proposal that would take advantage of and inaugurate this new space. His project was ultimately to be covered up once the renovation was complete.
