William Brymner (1855-1925) was one of the most influential art teachers in Canada. His openness to new movements and propensity to experiment informed his painting and hs pedagogy. Director of the Art Association of Montreal school from 1886 to 1921, Brymner taught such notable artists as Clarence Gagnon, A.Y. Jackson, Prudence Heward, Adrien Hebert, Edwinn Holgate, Emily Coonan, H. Mable May, Lilias Torrance Newton, Sarah Robertson and Marian Dale Scott. As an active member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, The Canadian Art Club, the Pen and Pencil club and the Arts Club of Montreal, he counted amongst his peers Maurice Cullen, Robert Harris. James Wilson Morrice, George A. Reid, MMarc0Aurele de Foy Suzor-Cote and Horatio Walker.
Drawn from the collections of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre and Power Corporation of Canada, William Brymner: Artist, Teacher, Colleague brings together Brymner's art with works by more than a dozen of his contemporaries and twenty-five of his students, to present a fresh look at a creative, social and intellectual millieu that had Brymner at its core. The publication includes the complete text of Brymner's renowned 1897 Impressionism lecture, as well as four essays examining the multifaceted talents of this remarkable artist.
